Each breed of dog has its own conventions as to the material, type and length of Show leads used in the show ring. In general, larger breeds are shown with heavier leads to match the size of the Dog, whereas smaller breeds are shown with lighter leads to compliment their smaller stature.
Choosing the correct Show lead for your dog is an essential part of your show technique and will directly influence your Dogs presentation, highlighting and accentuating the most prominent & important features of your show Dogs. Its therefore worth investing some time to make the correct choice.
Attending a dog show & speaking with other competitors is a good way to get to know the lead and collar combinations commonly used for showing a particular breed.
Although Dog Show leads come in all colours and colour combinations, many people prefer to to match the colour of the lead with the colour of their Dog, to make a pleasing combination. Darker coloured Dogs show well with a Brown or Black lead, lighter coloured Dogs will show well with a lead in Natural Leather. Leather is a very popular material for show leads, conveying an impression of quality, as well as being kind to the hands and comfortable for the Dog.
Slip Leads are widely used by all breeds but in particular the Gundog and Working Dog Groups. They consist of a lead with a sliding ring, which provides a gentle closing action - mimicking the action of a slip collar. This type of lead is ideal if you wish to transfer the lead from one dog to another since they automatically adjust to the size of the Dogs neck. Slip leads are elegant in their simple design, avoiding the bulk of a slip collar & clip lead. We make slip leads in two standard sizes but can make them in any size you require.
Clip (Snap) lead & Slip collar combination. This is a versatile combination, allowing one lead to be used with several collars. The slip collar automatically adjusts to the size of your dogs neck, providing a gentle closing action, and attaches to the lead via a clip (also called a snap link).
Some dogs will only show well in a show chain and Clip Lead. This particularly applies to more headstrong dogs who frequently respond better to the weight and sound of even a light show chain. Chains are not recommended for longer coated breeds – the chain can catch and snag the hair, which can cause the dog to shake or scratch in the show ring – not desirable!
Show sets are favoured by the Toy Group and for puppies of all breeds but they are also popular with Greyhounds and Salukis. Show Sets consist of a leather and fine curb-chain collar and a matching leather lead which is either permanently attached to the collar or is attached by a trigger clip.
